High-growth Jobs versus High-paying Jobs
As college graduates seek to land their first full-time job, starting salary and career growth potential are two of the variables most likely to grab their attention. While an ideal job would be one that is both high-paying and has bright prospects, it may be necessary to make a trade-off. In my opinion, recent grads are better of choosing a job with excellent career opportunities rather than the one with the highest salary. /While every graduate would like to make enough money to buy a fancy car or a beautiful house, a sense of personal fulfillment is even more important. The first job that a college student takes after graduation is crucial to shaping his or her career outlook and ambitions. Students who accept a position that pays well but is tedious or even mind-numbing will inevitably become discouraged and, eventually, 王珞丹电影l

Unlike a few generations ago, when employees often stayed with a single company for their entire working life, many of today's graduates will work for five or six different organizations over卖炭翁译文 their career spans. Some jobs may offer an attractive paycheck but little or no chance to develop professionally. On the other hand, companies that promote career growth constantly challenge their employees to learn new skills and upgrade existing ones. Graduates who opt to work for these companies will be much more “marketable" to future prospective em

Let's suppose a graduate receives two offers. The first is for a dead-end job with a $5o,ooo fixed salary; the second is for a growth-oriented job with a starting salary of $35,000 and a 10-percent annual raise. After 20 years, the first job will have accrued exactly $1 million in earnings, while income from the second and initially lower-paying job will have surpassed $2 million. Given that most people work about 40 years over their lifetimes, placing too much emphasis on a high starting salary could prove a costly mistake.
/In sum, jobs that provide excellent career prospects will give students a greater sense of fulfillment, enhance their future employability and, in the long term, lead to higher earnings. Of course, a fat paycheck is still alluring to many youngsters and, for this reason, companies will always find graduates willing to accept dead-end but high-paying jobs. The wisest students, however, will give precedence to career development over a high salary.
