英文中的小横线

收到EMS的校样。 一打开，就看见杂志编辑把原题目：
 江南古镇旅游>吉娜是哪国人
Evaluation of an ecosystem model for a wheat-maize double cropping
 
改成了:
 
Evaluation of an ecosystem model for a wheat–maize double cropping
 
紧接着，又在摘要中第一行就把
 
A process - based ecosystem model
 
改成
 
A process-based ecosystem model
 
之后这样类似的改动就连篇累牍了。
 
说实话，以前校对英文稿，也发现过类似的问题，但因为很少，而且小横线又如此之小，所以从来没对英文中的小横线留过心，在过意。
 
但这篇文章让编辑这么费心，看来是触到大神经了，所以赶快补课，捏成下表：

To break single words into parts, or to join ordinarily separate words into single words. Spaces should not be placed between a hyphen and either of the words it connects except when using a suspended or "hanging" hyphen (e.g. nineteenth- and twentieth-century writers).
(1)    这是英文中最小号的小横线
(2)    把一个单词分成两部分，如行末断字，分音节等
(3)    因为是连接一个单词的两部分，所以即使放在两个独立词之间，这两个词严格意义上实际上变成了一个词，如three-year-old girl

(2)    当连接两个词时，这两个词多是平行关系，不像hyphen互相之间有一定的修饰关系
(3)    而有时，即使是修饰关系，当连接的两个词的其中一个本身词是复合名词时，要用en dash，试比较:

到底哪个对？可能是印刷社的问题，我们不用考虑了。
