蕙兰芫荽，郁郁香芷
Scarborough Fair（斯卡保罗集市）原是一首17世纪的苏格兰民间谜歌（riddle song），原型来自The Elfin Knight (Child #2)，即“妖精骑士”（查尔德民歌集第二号），最早见
诸记载是在英格兰1673年。整段旋律弥漫着甜蜜而忧伤的悠远意境。所谓“riddle song”是
指那些民间流传广泛，但是不知道作者是谁的歌曲，而且由于人们的相互传唱，本来的曲调已
经改变了很多。这首民谣主要流传于英伦三岛和爱尔兰，在美国东部一些州和加拿大西部地区
歌的基础上加进了自己的再创造（尤其是里面那优美的吉它伴奏），把它变成了一首非常优美
的爱情歌曲。保罗·西蒙是六七十年代的青年的代言人。他曾在英国修习英国文学，文学功底
深厚，因而其歌词文字意境深邃。保罗曾于64－65年期间在英国度假，并经常出没于英国民谣
圈演唱，学会这首歌后，重新谱写了词曲。
Scarborough Fair这首歌第一次为我们所知应该是作为美国电影《毕业生》（The Graduate）的插曲。这部电影是当时美国大学生很喜欢的电影，这首歌曲和那首The Sound of Silence（寂静之声）也都是颇受欢迎的。其实，西蒙和加芬克尔的唱片专辑“Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme”是在1966年底问世的。电影《毕业生》是1967年上映的，吸纳了其中
两首作为插曲。
Scarborough最早在大约一千年前由Viking（维京）人在英格兰的西北部North
Yorkshire 登陆后逐渐成为的一个重要的港口。中世纪时期，Scarborough是来自全英格兰甚
至还有欧洲的商人经常聚集的一个海边重镇。Scarborough Fair在历史上是一个从8月15日
开始延续45天的交易集市。在那个年代持续如此之长的集市是很少见的。后来这个集市逐渐冷
清衰弱，现在Scarborough只是一个默默无闻的小镇了。
歌曲的主人公是一个被情人抛弃的男人。尽管歌词充满诗意和微妙的情调，但在中世纪时
期只能算民歌，而不可能是贵族的作品。那个年代，贵族和骑士们只能远远地对一个女人在心
里暗暗爱慕，而那样的倾情几乎是不可能得到回应的。
