Returning to a book you’ve read many times can feel like drinks with an old friend.
There’s a welcome familiarity熟悉感—but also sometimes a slight轻微的suspicion猜疑that time has change改变you both, and thus因此the
relationship关系. But books don’t change, people do. And that’s what makes the act表演of rereading so rich and transformative有改革能力的.
The beauty of rereading再阅读lies in在于the idea that our bond with the work is based on基于our present现在的mental精神的register 注册;记录. It’s true, the older I get, the more I feel time has wings翅膀. But with reading, it’s all about the present现在. It’s about the now and what one contributes to贡献the now, because reading is a give and take between author作者and reader读者. Each has to pull their own weight自己的分量.
There are three books I reread再阅读annually每年. The first, which I take to reading every spring, is Emest Hemingway’s A Moveable Feast. Published出版in 1964, it’s his classic经典的memoir回忆录of
1920s Paris. The language is almost intoxicating(令人陶醉的), an aging writer looking back on an ambitious雄心勃勃的yet 更simpler简单time. Another is Annie Dillard’s Holy the Firm, her poetic诗意的1975 ramble(随笔) about everything and nothing. The third book is Julio Cortázar’s Save Twilight: Selected Poems, because poetry. And because Cortázar.
While I tend to倾向于buy a lot of books, these three were given to me as gifts, which might add to增加the meaning意义I attach to对(依附)them. But I imagine想象that, while money is indeed的确wonderful 精彩的and necessary必要的, rereading an author’s work作品is the highest currency货币a reader can pay them. The best books are the ones
