The Public English Test Level 3 Essay
I have to take the Public English Test Level 3 soon and I'm kind of nervous about the essay part. My teacher said we have to write an essay of between 120-180 words on a topic they give us. That doesn't seem too bad, except that she also said they are super picky about the format and will take off points if the format is wrong!
I've been practicing writing essays following the format they want. It's pretty strict! You have to leave a blank line after the topic is stated, then indent the first line of each paragraph. All the paragraphs need to be indented too. And at the end you have to leave a blank line before the last line which just has your word count.
My best friend Johnny accidentally indented the first line of the essay twice instead of just once on his practice essay. Miss Roberts took off 2 points just for that! She said "Improper indentation." I was like "No way, 2 whole points just for indenting the first line too far? That's crazy!"
Johnny got marked down again because he didn't indent his body paragraphs. He just left them not indented at all. Miss Roberts circled all his body paragraph first lines and wrote "No paragraph indentation" and deducted another 2 points.
I think that's really harsh to take off 4 points just for indentation, especially on a 120 word essay where that could be like a 15% deduction. Johnny was bummed. His essay wasn't even that bad besides the format errors.
三级 英语 My friend Anna got reamed too. She indented her body paragraph lines correctly with a 5 space indent. But then on the very last line for her word count, she forgot to go back to the left margin first. Miss Roberts marked it "

Hi friends! Today I want to talk about the Public English Test III writing section. This is a super important test that you have to take in elementary school. The writing part is really hard because you have to follow all these rules and templates. If you don't, you can lose a lot of points!
The writing template has four paragraphs. The first paragraph is the introduction. This is where you state your viewpoint or main idea. You have to be really clear and get right to the point. No rambling allowed! If your introduction is too long or doesn't make sense, you can lose up to 2 points.
Next is the two body paragraphs. This is where you explain your reasons and give examples. Each body paragraph needs a topic sentence, some supporting details, and examples. The examples are really important to get full points. If you don't give good examples, you can lose 1-2 points per body paragraph.
Finally, there is the conclusion paragraph. This is where you restate your main viewpoint from the introduction. You also need to summarize your key points from the body paragrap
hs. If your conclusion is missing information or doesn't match the rest of the essay, you can lose 1-2 points as well.
In addition to following the four paragraph structure, you also need to use formal language and vocabulary. No slang or casual words allowed! Every informal word can cost you 0.5 points. You also have to use transition words like "furthermore", "in addition", and "in conclusion". Missing transitions can lead to 1 point deductions.
The graders also look at your grammar, spelling, and punctuation really carefully. Even tiny mistakes can cost you 0.5 points each. Run-on sentences are 1 point off. Sentence fragments are 1 point off too. You have to be perfect!
So as you can see, there are lots of ways to lose points on the writing section if you don't follow the template exactly. Between the paragraph structure, examples, formal language, transitions, grammar, and spelling, it's really easy to make careless mistakes. That's why it's so important to practice the template over and over until you have it mastered.
My teacher always says that high scores on this test can help us get into better middle schools. So we have to take it super seriously! Last year, my best friend lost 5 points just from using "a lot" instead of "numerous" or "plentiful". He was devastated. Another kid lost 4 points because two of his body paragraphs didn't have real examples. Just fluff!
This year, I'm determined to get a perfect score. I've been doing practice tests every week, and my mom has been proofreading my work. She's a grammar nazi for sure! But it's helping me avoid those silly little mistakes that can really add up. As long as I follow the template 100%, I should do well.
Some of my classmates think this test is stupid and that memorizing templates is dumb. But I don't agree
