Collin held the bamboo piece carefully as he hurried home. He hid it behind his back and slid open the front door. To his surprise, Mom was carrying something that looked like a cake. He looked closer and realized Mom had topped a flat brown oatcake with dried apples and cinnamon sugar. A real treat, on the Moon. After the family had sung to Carina and Dad had cut the cake, Collin said, “And now I have a present for you.” He handed his sister the bamboo rod, “Happy birthday!”
“What is it?” Carina asked, looking at it curiously. “A rain stick,” said Collin. “Whenever you turn it over, the Moon pebbles fall around the nails and it sounds like rain.” Carina turned the stick, and the room w
as filled with a sound like rain drumming on a roof. “It’s Moon rain!” she said. “It makes me feel like I’m home.” She smiled at Collin and turned the rain stick over again.

Text 1
M: OK, folks, we’re almost at the last stop. Please make sure you have all your things with you when you get off, and have a good day!
W: Excuse me, sir. When is the last bus back into town?
M: 8∶30 pm, madam.
Text 2
W: Jack, can you type the letter for me before you buy a present for Mary?
M: No problem. I needn’t go downtown so hurriedly.
Text 3
M: I’d like to get these trousers shortened by an inch. Also, do you think you could make the waist tighter?
W: Sure. Why don’t you step over here, and we’ll do some quick measurements?
Text 4
W: What’s wrong with you? Didn’t you sleep well last night?
M: No, I watched a basketball match till 3∶00 am. Don’t worry. I am off duty today.
W: But I’m worried about your health.
Text 5
M: You should read this. It’s one of my favorite books of all time. I recommend it to all my friends who like to read.
W: Actually, I’ve always wanted to read that. But I can never finish books with too many pages. It
looks like a dictionary.
Text 6
W: Hello, can I help you?
M: Yeah, can I get some help for my ankle, because I twisted it during the soccer match just now. W: Are you still able to walk?
M: Actually, not very much.
W: How long have you had the pain?
M: About half an hour ago.
W: Really, half an hour. Well, what we need you to do is fill this form out and then we’ll get somebody to help you shortly. It shouldn’t take very long.
M: OK, that’ll be good.
Text 7
W: Happiness Hotel, can I help you?
M: Yes. I need a room for tomorrow, and do you have any room available?
W: Yes, we do. What kind of room would you like? We have single rooms, double rooms, and business suites.
M: I’d like a suite, please.
W: No problem, sir.
M: What is the price of the suite?
W: It is $200 per night.
M: It is a little high. I’m told that your hotel is offering a discount now.
W: Yes. If you have a membership card, I can give you 20% discount.
M: Great, here is my membership card.
Text 8
W: So, Henry, you’ve been to Thailand, right? What did you do there?
M: Well, one of the things I did there was to take a Thai cooking course.
W: Oh, wow. I noticed some people learning to make Thai food from TV. How did you learn that? M: Well, it was really interesting actually. They picked me up first thing in the morning and drove me to a local market, where they introduced me to various herbs, fruits and vegetables. Then they took me to an outdoor kitchen right by a beach. I got to do cooking right in front of a beautiful beach.
W: Wow.
M: There were two teachers that taught me how to do all these things. And they even taught me how to do fruit carving.
W: That sounds fantastic. And do you ever cook Thai food at home now?
M: Not yet, but I plan to run a restaurant of my own.
W: Good.
Text 9
W: Tim, if you could pick any job, what do you think would be a cool job, a movie actor or a rock star?
M: Well, I think it would be pretty cool to be a fisherman.
W: Do you get paid a lot of money?
M: Not so much, but you can work with nature. You can catch your own food. How about your cool job? A movie star?
W: No. I think I would like to be a writer.
M: Why is that?
W: Because a movie star would be good but there is too much fame. Too many people always want to talk to you or want your autograph. As a writer, you can make your own time and do it whenever you like.
M: Yeah. Any other jobs you would like to be?
W: I think an astronaut would be good. I like to conduct experiments in a spacesuit. What appeals to me most is looking back at the Earth, the blue planet.
M: Sounds like you like the ocean. You should think about being a fisherwoman.
W: No way!
Text 10
Here are the instructions for next weekend’s camping trip in Scotland. There are seventeen people going on this trip, so it’s important that you arrive at the meeting point at 7∶30 am so that we’ll be able to leave at 8 am. Please make sure you are on the right minibus. Last week’s e-mail gave all this information. We should arrive in the camping area at about 2 pm, which will give us enough time to buy the food we need in the local supermarket. Then we’ll go to the hills where we will set up a total of four large tents. Each tent will have a tent leader, a person who went on this trip last year and therefore has the necessary experience. If you have any problems during the two days, you may turn to your tent leader for help. We are not expecting there to be very bad weather this weekend in Scotland, but the weather situation in the Scottish hills is always very unpredictable and for this reason, we have advised everyone to take wet weather clothing with you. If you have any other questions about the trip, come either to me or Mrs. Sanderson.
