元宵节古诗词100首简单易背
WASHINGTON  The head of the World Bank says for the first time in human history, it is possible to end poverty around the world.Jim Yong Kim told a Washington audience Tuesday, he wants to make ending world poverty by 2030 a top goal for the bank and governments around the world.World Bank President Jim Yong Kim says that the problems of poverty, hunger and inequality are wide, urgent and a matter of survival of millions.
"We know that despite the great successes of the last decade, there are still about 1.3 billion people living in extreme poverty, 870 million who go hungry every day, and 6.9 million children under five dying every year," he said.
But Kim told a Washington audience that the previous successful efforts to cut the number of people living in extreme poverty by half give them hope.
"We are at an auspicious moment in history, when the successes of past decades and an increasingly f
avourable economic outlook (前景:) combine to give developing countries a chance-for the first time ever-to end extreme poverty within a generation," he said in a speech at Georgetown University."Our duty now must be to ensure that these favourable circumstances are matched with deliberate decisions to realize this historic opportunity."
Kim says success will require increasing the speed of economic growth, particularly in South Africa and South Asia.
But he warned that civil unrest (动乱) could happen if economic growth does not help people at all income levels, and also include women and youth.
Kim says that the World Bank and other development agencies will have more resources to get this job done right."Meeting this 2030 goal will take extraordinary effort," he said.
However, Kim warned that all the progress in fighting poverty could be destroyed by climate disasters unless the nations of the world do more to prevent climate change.

【湖南省长沙市长郡中学2016届高三下学期第六次月考】
Most of the time, the ground feels solid beneath our feet. That's comforting. But it's also misleading because there's actually a lot going on underground. Masses of land (called plates) slip, slide, and bump against each other, slowly changing the shape of continents and oceans over millions and billions of years.
Scientists know that Earth formed about 4. 5 billion years ago.  They also know that our planet was hot at first. As it cooled, its outermost layer, called the crust (地壳), eventually formed moving plates. Exactly when this shift happened, however, is an open question.
Now, an international group of researchers has an answer. They've found new evidence suggesting that Earth's crust started shifting at least 3.8 billion years ago. The new estimate is l. 3 billion years earlier than previous ones.
Not long before 3. 8 billion years ago,  lots of small planets were hitting Earth, keeping its crust in a hot, melting state. After the hard crust formed, much of it sank at various times into the planet's hot insides. There, it melted before returning to the surface.
In some places, however, the crust never sank. One of the oldest such places is in Greenland, in an area called the Isua supracrustal (上地壳) belt. The rocky crust there is between 3. 7 and 3. 8 billion
years old. The belt was once part of the seafloor, but now it is exposed to air.    The researchers recently took a close look at the Isua supracrustal belt. They noticed long, parallel cracks(裂缝)in the rock that have been filled in with a type of volcanic rock.
To explain this structure, the scientists propose that tension in the crust caused the seafloor to crack open long ago. Hot, liquid rock oozed from deep inside Earth to fill the cracks. Finally, the whole area cooled, forming what we see today.
That explanation, plus chemical clues inside the rock, suggests that the Isua supracrustal belt was once part of plate under the ocean, beginning around 3.8 billion years ago.
“It's a fantastic case of solving a jigsaw puzzle(拼图),”says one of the researchers. He notes that the puzzle was “a very difficult one because these rocks are all very old and have been badly ruined".
32. The underlined phr ase “oozed from" in Paragraph 7 is closest in meaning to
A. filled up gradually
B. washed away quickly
C. flew out of slowly
D. broke through suddenly
33. What can we infer from the text?
A. The shapes of continents and oceans changed slowly.
B. The Earth's crust started shifting l.3 billion years ago.
C. The crust began to shift when the Earth was hot.
D. The hit from small planets made the Earth cool.
34. What do scientists know about the past of the Isua supracrustal belt?
A. It was once covered by hot, liquid rock.
B. It remained under the deep sea.
C. It stayed hot and sinking.
D. It kept moving slowly.
35. The text is mainly about
A. why the Earth cooled
B. how the Isua supracrustal belt formed
C. whether the ground beneath our feet is still
D. when Earth's crust began shifting
【答案】
32.C
33.A
34.B
35.D
34.B细节理解题。根据第五段In some places, however, the crust never sank. One of the oldest such places is in Greenland, in an area called the Isua supracrustal (上地壳) belt. The rocky crust there is between 3. 7 and 3. 8 billion years old. The belt was once part of the seafloor, but now it is exposed to air.可知Isua supracrustal以前是属于海底的。故选B。
35.D主旨大意题。根据第二段最后一句Ex actly when this shift happened, however, is an open question.

Isua supracrustal
belt,再看关于它的描述,发现原文中The belt was once part of the seafloor 与选项B中的It remained under the deep sea.是同等替换。

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C、D)中,选出最佳选项。
It’s a litt le understood, but surprisingly common condition which women from all walks of life are suffering from—Asker’s Syndrome. The main symptom of Asker’s Syndrome is that you’re unable to ask for what you want.
win7共享打印机
I took notice o f Asker’s Syndrome during a recent visit from my mother and mother-in-law. Both of them are unable to express something as simple as what they would like for dinner. For example, asking my mum which frozen meal she would like goes something like this:
Me: Which dinner do you want?
杨受成 关之琳Her: You choose.
Me: No. You choose, you’re the one who’s going to eat it.
Her: Whichever one you don’t want.
Me: Mum!!!
Her: Just open the fridge and the first one you pull out will do.
Similarly, when I asked my mother-in-law to select which meals she’d like me to order from the home-delivery she would like and she said, “I’ll just have whichever one is left over.”  This goes way beyond politeness. After pushing both of them at length to state a preference—and failing—it would seem that they are actually incapable of voicing what they want.
And it’s not just older women who have a “this is good enough for me” attitude. A friend who works in marketing told me about a focus group she ran with thirty-something women. They were only able to express their preferences through their children or partner. Rather than saying what they liked, they would answer “My son would like this,” or “My husband would enjoy that.”
Asker’s Synd rome can strike young. At five years old my daughter Violet is showing the early stages of Asker’s Syndrome. She’s learned that women don’t ask, but rather drop hints.  She’ll say, “Mumm
y I saw yoghurt in the fridge,” rather than, “Can I have a yoghurt please?” or “Remember last Sunday afternoon we went to the park?” rather than “Can we go to the park?”
It’s widely documented that women are less likely than men to ask for pay rises and promotions. Instead they work hard without complaints, hoping that somebody else will decide they are worthy and give them an award.
No doubt, many wom en develop Asker’s Syndrome as a defensive measure because they’ve been labeled as pushy or rude for simply asking for what they want. But in the long term, preventing our ability to express our desires doesn’t serve us well.
It’s time to cure ourselves and our girls of Asker’s Syndrome. For women in our culture, asking is a skill that we need to learn and practice. And if we all do it, then women asking will become the standard of proper behavior rather than the exception.

A. older women care more about their children’s opinion
B. older women are afraid that their choices are out of date
