understanding conversations
M: Your sister's a doctor, isn't she?
W: Yes, she's working in a war zone in Africa.
M: Why did she want to go to a war zone?
W: She was upset when she saw the war victims on the television news, so she decided to join an organisation called Doctors Without Borders. It was created by French doctors in 1971, but doctors who are in this organisation come from all over the world, and they're dedicated to helping people in areas where there's very little medical care available. Most often doctors are sent to areas of disasters and wars because that's where help is needed the most. They provide medicines, give treatments and educate people about healthy living. So far, the organisation has provided medical care for over 80 countries, and for their humanitarian efforts, it won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1999.
M: Does she get paid?
W: She receives a salary, but it's lower than her salary here in London.
M: Why would she want to work for less money in dangerous conditions?
W: Money's not important to her. She enjoys going to different countries to learn about other cultures. My sister's also enthusiastic about helping people and feels appreciated by them. Sometimes the patient's family brings her small gifts because they value her sacrifice. Soldiers are constantly fighting near the village and injuring innocent people whilst they're shooting at each other. If my sister and the other doctors were not there, these villagers would surely die.
M: Isn't she worried about her safety?
W: It's very dangerous. The area near my sister's hospital was bombed recently and a doctor was injured. Sometimes doctors are taken by soldiers who keep them until somebody pays a lot of money for the doctors' freedom. My sister knows these incidents make us very anxious, so she avoids telling us. We've tried to convince her to return home, but she's determined to make a meaningful difference in people's lives.
