of this word suggests that marriage begins with the __25__ of honey, but soon wanes(衰败)like the moon. It still contains those implications today in the expression honeymoon period, which refers to the first stage of a new activity when people are prepared __26__ to ignore the imperfections. Nowadays, in the context of marriage, the negative implications have __27__ and the word simply refers to a holiday taken by a newly-married couple.
This word originated from Latin, where salarium referred to ‘a(n) __28__ given to soldiers to buy salt’. Salt used to something greatly valued, over which wars were fought. It was not taken for granted as it is today. Use of the word soon __29__ out to the current meaning of ‘fixed periodic payment of work done’ and passed in this sense-into English.
This word describes something __30__ luxurious. In Britain it also means somebody or something __31__ of the upper classes. It first appeared in the early twentieth century and was widely thought to be an acronym(首字母缩略词)for ‘Port Out, Starboard Home’, referring to the location of the more __32__ cabins on passenger ships travelling between Britain and India. Those on the port (left) side on the way out, and the starboard (right) on t
he return trip, benefited from the sea breeze and __33__ from the sun. Although it provides a very neat explanation, there isn’t any evidence for it. A more possible solution is that the modern adjective, posh, is the same word as the noun posh, which is no longer in use, meaning, ‘dandy’ (a man who cares a lot about his clothes.)
