In addition to the buns, Shanghai is also famous for its "lion's head meatballs", which are large, tender meatballs cooked in a savory broth. The name "lion's head" comes from the size and shape of the meatballs, which resemble the head of a lion. These meatballs are often served with vegetables and are a comforting and hearty dish that is perfect for a cold day.
One of my personal favorite Shanghai dishes is the "stir-fried river shrimp", which are small freshwater shrimp stir-fried with garlic, ginger, and scallions.
