Singapore
A Place You Will Never Forget !
The topic of this unit is about fun places, and it is close to the life of students, thus, they may show great interest in this lesson. After this lesson, students can talk about the fun places that theyve been to and then they can find the meaning of life from travelling, furthermore to motivate their love for life.
Students are from Grade 8, after several years learning, they have laid a foundation for a certain amount of listening, reading and speaking skills. So, this passage wont be difficult for them to understand. What’s more, students in this age may show great interest in what t
heyre interested in. The topic of this unit can arouse their interest easily.
In this class, the teacher will act as a tour guide to show students around Singapore. I will divide the tour of Singapore into three stops; show them around Singapore stop by stop. All the students will be divided into several families. During the tour, when I meet some problems, each family will have a competition to solve these problems.

By the end of the class, students are able to master the key vocabulary.

By the end of the class, students are able to use the reading skills about scanning, making notes and a mind map.

By the end of the class, students are able to learn the meaning of life from travelling, and thenforget motivate students love for life.

Ⅴ.Teaching Procedures:
Step 1: Lead-in   
1.Guess the teachers part-time job.
2.Show the pictures of the places the teacher has been to.
Step 2: Pre-reading
      The teacher asks the students if they have been to Singapore and what
they want to know about Singapore. Show the video of Singapore to
let them have a general idea of Singapore.
Step 3: While-reading
1.Tell students the tour schedule of Singapore: the National Museum, some restaurants and the Night Safari. Make students read the passage quickly and match the stop with each paragraph.
2.Paragraph 1&4:
(1)Show Ss around the National Museum. Make Ss know the location, the population, the language and the weather in Singapore. (2)Finish the exercises of Paragraph1&4.Teach the students the reading strategy of scanning and guessing the new words.
3.Paragraph 2:
(1)Watch a piece of video of the local street food to introduce Chinese food in Singapore.
(2)Show some pictures to introduce some other food in Singapore.
4.Paragraph 3:
(1)Show the students around the Night Safari. Make them watch a piece of video of the Night Safari to learn about the special zoo in a more direct way.
(2)Make students answer the questions in this part.
This part can make students consolidate the reading strategy of scanning.
Step 4: Post-reading
1. Make notes about Singapore. Write down anything that you remember of Singapore. Teach the reading strategy of making notes.
2. Use the notes they’ve made to draw a mind map of Singapore.
3. Group work:
Introduce the place where they have been to a friend from America. They can introduce Sin
gapore or the place theyve been to. Ask them to draw a mind map of the place first, and then use it to describe the place.
Step 5: Summary
1.Make a summary of what we have learnt in this class of Singapore.
2.Show some pictures of Singapore again, tell students it is a place that you will never forget. Wish them to visit Singapore again.
Step 6: Extension and expansion
1.Announce the result of competition, tell students that the result is not important, important is the process, just like life.
2.Show students the sentences about life, tell students the meaning of life from travelling and then to motivate their love for life.
